Rockaway Park: Tenure may protect good teachers, but it sadly also protects awful ones. As a language student back in the '70s — even taking two languages at the same time, with dreams of becoming trilingual in high school — I had a teacher with tenure who decided, for some reason, she didn't like me. She took my five years of French (loving every minute of it) and brought me down to a barely passing student who couldn't wait to get out of her class and give up languages. I dropped Spanish as well after my experience with her and totally lost my spirit. A few years later, my sister was sadly put into a class with this same teacher. Tenure may protect good teachers, but it sadly also protects awful ones.
